today i had to change a compressor on a foster 2door upright freezer i reclaimed the gas from it weighed out nearly a kilo of 404a plate says 600grams (wonder why the compressor failed ) so i remomoved old compressor it smelled a bit but it also had the bright green dye in to find leaks what i struggle to understand is with a system that small why add it if you cant find a leak on a system that small its time to become a plumber full time lol :) fitted new comp changed drier brazed in shrader valve on condenser out let i fitted a flare drier so i could purge nitrogen through capillary for 10mins at about 5psi to make sure it clear of any blockages pressure tested it to 20bar fitted vac pump got 6 torr in 20 min was well impressed 2torr in 45min have worked on all the other units in this kitchen and have had to do triple evac on all of them at least once after changing evaps or capillary or both previous contractor just went along and added gas moisture probs i have had on other cabs are unbelieveable this compressor change went brilliantly and i only put in 600grams of 404a and it came down to temp in an hr amazing you dont have to over charge unit if you do everything by the book and make sure theres no moisture or air in system oh and top tip to any one who works on these and has a leak they cant find change the evap an capillary especially on the old units with hot gas defrost the drier is good idea as well and fit a schrader valve in discharge line how can you vac it out properly if you dont ? oh and a mag lifter on hot gas solanoid makes a good professional touch as well :)

u didnt do an acid test!!! -plumber haha, did u clean the condenser coil?also id change the condenser fan coz for the sake of a 10w multi fit, maybe replace the digi controller too if its a few year old!

ahhh-personnel van stock!! ive got loads of stock of condensate pumps, fixings, core cutters, fuses etc.
what bosses dont realise is if u have a part in the van it pulls u out the s**t! then u replenish stock at a later date. but they wont splash out on kitting u out with stock, the only problem is the warranty is running out whilst its getting squashed by gas bottles etc.
oh well done for changing the fan ,youll make a good plumber yet haha

Hi Simon,

Is that right that you have to take the charge weight with a pinch of salt?
I've worked on a couple that initially seem short of charge but weigh out plenty of gas and prior to that would equalise so no obvious blockage. Unless extra refrigerant is added then evaporator is starved although subcooling hovers around 8k at factory charge so it would seem correctly charged.
I've put it down to either a partial blockage in the cap tube or the wrong weight on the data plate.

Ironicly I've got one to look at on Tuesday. Another tech has pressure tested it for 24hrs (which held), regassed to the data plate. I was called to it and found no fan output from the controller (another common fault). New controller fitted but evap starved.
Smelt a rat so checked another Foster freezer. Was running to temperature but suction pressure was 0psig - thought my gauge line wasn't pressing the valve core down to begin with!

Cheers,
Andy.

Tayters, seems like some systems need more gas and others do if larger than factory drier is fitted. Has your better half stolen the remote for the T.V?

also a partial blockage can be overcome by the additional charge with just an slight increase in head pressure

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

The boss has hit the sack. Even so it wouldn't work from the kitchen.
I'm multi-tasking doing this and watching Terminator 3.
When it's finished I'll moonwalk into the bedroom yell 'Get to da chopper!!' in my finest Arnie accent.

Oh, that was from Predator wasn't it.

when i change drier which i do everytime i break system on these cabs i put a CO32 sporlan 1/4 flare drier in makes it easier to change you also need to look at height and angle of the drier if it to hi conderser has to fill with liquid to that height to keep good flow to cappillary have had to add extra charge to some foster cabs and i dont know why either but i try not to had few in chilled prep areas that struggle to get a warm condenser so have added extra to make sure they work you may want to try just purging nitrogen through yr unit at low pressure for 10 mins this does make a difference to how it vaccs out i have been following up previous contractor on my sites for 2-3yrs now and have had some major probs with some of the foster cabs where they just added a shot of gas got one cab replaced as i had changed capillary 4 times and done numerous gas and drier changes all down to there bad practice when they changed capillary an just cut it and didnt braze ends moisture will kill these cabs and i dont think they owned a vac pump lol good luck with yr cab oh and because it a small system it needs perfect practice every single tme or you will get probs :)

Just to let you know, reclaime only 300g of the 420g charge, found leak on cap tube where it had rubbed through on compressor (think I made it worse by poking about to find the leak which might explain why it held a previous 25hr test).
Repaired the tube with a bit of 1/4" pipe, new dryer (copper spun type with HP connection port).
Regassed with 420g (factory charge) same story with starved evap, suction pressure about 0psig. Subcooling was around 10K but cap tube was clear, condensor blown out, purged whilst brazing and all that jazz.
Ended up sticking a final charge of 600g. Subcooling now around 15K, SST -30*C S/H still high at 20k.
Reached -16 downstairs where I did all the work. Wheeled it back upstairs, turned it on, compressor getting red hot but not spinning. Great. Either took a knock on the way up and come off internally or maybe a slug of liquid stuck in there when Iturned it back on. Left it off overnight.
Back next day, turned on and it fired up, reached setpoint, cycled, worked on defrost etc.
Maybe it didn't like the bit of extra charge so I took a smidgen out.
What a rigmorole, but I got there in the end.

Peace out,
Andy.

i think the slightly higher pressure from the extra gas can cause problems on start when unit has warmed up have only ever had to overcharge units running in chill rooms so condensers have been always cold next one you do try reposistioning the drier as in slightly lower down condenser before you add extra gas an see if that works :)
