Hi guys,
Just wondering after fitting some flare nuts to a cassette the other day and making a c ock up of it, how many times have you had to remake the same flare? my record is four: first attempt forgetting to put the nut on, second putting the nut on only to find it`s on the wrong way, third: getting it right but then realising the nut won`t go through that bulkhead.
Fourth and final flare ( by this time I was ready to pack it all in and become a hermit) Hurrah!
By the way the flare on the casstte mentioned was ok but on easing the 1/2" pipe into position I had that sinking feeling when the tube suddenly gave out and kinked...Oh what joy

wow-are u a plumber? sometimes its best not to boast about being crap at flaring, but practice, practice, practise.
are u using a rolling flaring tool? try a small ammount of oil on the face of the flaring tools!-oh pipe from indoor to outdoor theres more space for flaring.

Hey, that's harsh.
I've had problems with some copper cracking on 1/4" pair coil (the pre insulated crap), 4-5 times in my life I forgot the nut.
But nearly all the time it's trouble free and the flare is like a mirror baby!

thats 4-5 times in your life(approx once every 5yrs, the post indicates 4 times on the same unit(same day) so hence my comment(plumbers in the uk are a pain in the ar*e just because they can pipe up radiators doesnt mean they should install splits. i know aussie plumbers are qualified to install ac pipework but not comission systems or run power supplies

As 'Install' said not good to admit failures,

But I am not proud either, the main thing I used to do wrong was after flaring, I would attach the nut first, instead of the mating the faces first & have in the (distant) past messed a few up, more than I'd like to admit, but misstakes are good as they are the learning curves you never forget:D

If you can admit you made a mistake, you can fix it.

Its those who "don't make mistakes" that I'm worried about.

1st day of college flaring and swaging and brazing. whats worrying is if glen is 16-18 then that failure rate would be acceptable but if he is out of his time, then thats more worrying, but i bet he has a good scrap collection:p

its about £4 a kilo up here, but if his boss has his head screwed on then he'll be buying that lawton stuff thats double coated and worth f**k all.

simon@parker
21-08-2011, 08:33 PM
lawton stuff wots that then not heard of it ? i do a few installs but try and buy from reputable suppliers as have had coils from cheap ones an tube is ovaled makin it a pain to spring bend an flare :) oh and i done the missed flare nut twice and over flared one once since i been using new 410 block they been perfect everytime have flared before and looked at it an thought bugger that an re done one cos it looked slightly off can be anally retentive some days like that lmao :)

climate ctr are going to stock it soon.its copper pipe with an aluminum outer shell, worth nothing at the scrap yard and its 20% cheaper than normal coils, only prob is to swage it u need to clean the outer casing or braze a piece of copper in ! not good.

No, :DI bluffed my way into my 1st refrigeration job, & even managed to put the gauges on the wrong way round on the 1st day, with my new boss looking over saying "you might want to swap them over" :o

Never a true'er word , Mate

I have met many that try to tell me ' I dont make mistakes' or, 'I fix it first time everytime'

My reply of "yeah I'm the queen of sheba" never goes down too well :D

I had many good years flaring, using the "grunter meter" to set the torque settings. One day a service engineer went to a job I had installed 6 months earlier, and said the 1/4" was leaking and the flare nut was loose (Later it was found that there was a leak on a manufactures joint) So for the next few jobs, I increased the grunt setting to ensure that the problem would not occur again. Bollocks I would just tighten to much, rip the flare of the end of the pipe. Luckily always sorted prior to commissioning. Went back to the old method, alls well again.

Is that the:
6" shifter for 1/4"
8" shifter for 3/8"
10" shifter for 1/2"
12" shifter for 5/8"
Method? :) :D

I think some of you are taking things a bit to seriously. We`ve all had days where things just don`t go right. The flares were fine and I always use a roll type flarer it was just that the brain cells were a bit slow that day, and as for admiting mistakes, well as I`m fifty seven I wouldn`t be human if I hadn`t made a few in in the last forty one years of work.
By the way I`m not a pumber I served my five year apprenticeship on British Rail as a mechanical fitter. I`ve worked loco diesel engines, and tower cranes and crawler cranes in the plant industry. I know my way around a tool room where I can use all machines, how many here can say they can cut an internal Acme thread on a lathe?.
Sorry if it seems I`m ranting a bit but I get the impression I`m being called a bodger and I don`t like it.

apologies for the harshness, but im a perfectionist,my lad is a 1st yr apprentice and i dont trust him flaring pipework due to the fact once youve cut the pipe then balls a flare up its not easy to stretch the pipework to rectify this, if his flares are no good on a practise peice of pipe then id stick his thumb in the block and wind it in! some of us take the mickey out of each other, its a way of letting off steam after a stressfull day.:)

Mr Bodger (just teasing)

Your so right, we do all get days like that when we just wish the day would end & it's time for home, feet up & a nice bit of dinner whilst relaxing.

Only to get home & find the dinners in the dog & you have a house full of yakking sheila's !

I disappear for a couple of months and this is what happens to the RE forum?*
;-)

No one uses flare spanners anymore it's torque wrenches (open end anyway), or the shifters.

* just checked, and even though it seems I've been away for ages, looks like I've been dropping in every couple of weeks.
So what the hell happened in such a really short time?
