Really old unit, is it worth it?
Transformer shorted out, should I just replace the transformer (where could I even get one?) or fit a soft start in this 20 year old+ package a/c?
Transformer set up obviously aftermarket and added to unit.
Compressor is a Mitsubishi JH522YEB

What type of soft starter should I be looking at?

Hi,

I've used these items before. Compact and simple. We buy directly from supplier, Inaco, in Western Sydney. Not sure about price vs tranny.

Its not the cost of the soft starter but the down time and money you will spend to find a replacment transformer.

Soft starter is what we use today, go for it.

Anyone got any info on the compressor? Is it a 5hp? I don't know the way mits designates model numbers.
Took a photo of the sticker on it, but it has nothing as far as amps or capacity so I can work out what soft starter I need

Hi Paul_h.
save yourself the greif and put it back on star delta, looks like it has done the hard yards already. One more contactor and back in business.

Star Delta staring on a 3 pin terminal compressor? I thought you needed 6 terminals to do star delta?

Hi Paul.
you are correct, I did not look close enough at pics. So go DOL

Tempted to just go DOL, but the fact all this gear was fitted to it after install makes me think this a/c may have had problems with burn outs, fuses blowing etc in the past.
It definitely wouldn't be economical to replace the compressor on this unit. And a package a/c repalcement isn;t cheap, especially on a 2nd storey roof. So worth the cost of some sort of soft start.

Anyone used a seimens siruis 3r http://siemens.pc24.de/3RW30161CB14

Need a soft start rated at 9a, inaco mentioned by HVACRsaurus won't deal with me because I'm in perth, nhp don't really want to deal with me either. Told me all they'll do is supply at full list price ($850!) a S+S soft start.

The seimens is $350 from RS components.

I've used some seimens switchgear and VSD's, reasonably reliable but definitely not bomb proof. Good price though, I'd go for it..
