To some it may seem a stupid question, but what metal are these made of?

Mainly brass, but have seen some steel ones (nuts).

Complements everyone likes, myself included.
I was just doubting myself that's all, somewhere in the Grey cells there is still something nagging me.
With regard to Gun metal being used in some form or another?
It may not even be a fridge application that the "Gun Metal" is applicable to.
There again it may be an alternative when Ammonia is the choice of refrigerant.

Anyway it really bugging me, so if anyone can add anything?
Thanks again MS and IM. (Lazy typing prevails!)

ive seen gun metal flare nuts on old r12 condensing units-might have been cheap alloy-thats when insulation was that cork tape wrapped round the suction line and copper clips on planks to support pipework!-20yr ago
