hello,

i have a question regarding reversing valve operation:
when one initially starts a home air conditioner in "heating mode", does the air conditioner starts in cooling mode for a few seconds in order to operate the reversing valve (to have suitable pressure difference essential for reversing valve operation) and then keeps operating in heating mode?

The solenoid will open to allow system pressures to even out, then it will close and begin to run in heating mode with the indoor fan off, once the indoor coil achieves a pre set temp the fan will start
(assuming the unit opererates in heating with the coil de energised)

At initial start pressures are equilised in system. Solenoid of 4-way valve energise before compressor. As pressure build-up when compressor start to work, it makes valve switch to heating mode. That is common way. On some units it can be different.
