Our chilled water pumps fail often becuase of the shaft mis alignment as the bearings to be changed frequently. Currently we are using Horozontal Split case pumps. So I am planning to replace the Split case with Direct driven motor pumps. Is it worthy? or I will call for a specialist contractor to align the pumps in site...

Please let me know the best option among the following for the chilled water system:
1) Close coupled direct driven motor pumps
2) Horizontal Split Case pumps...
Also pls give me the advantages of one another

Hi ibnibrahim2000
I Ausie and NZ if we had a pump which failed more than once we would call in Ajax Pumps who are experts in this area and manufacture pump sets which are very common on chilled and condenser water systems here. There are laser alignment specialists which are used to align the motor with the pump also. Sorry I am not familiar with the term horizontal split case pumps.

Can you convert them to a belt driven set instead of close coupled.

Alignment is the real issue, get a lazer alignment done. Or use a DTI and do it yourself.

You cannot use flexible couplings, they can accommodate a small amount of misalignment and provide a small amount of shock relief. Should be available from most bearing suppliers in various makes and sizes.
