Hi all,

When introducing an accumulator to a system, what are the design considerations for it placement in the system?

Especially in respect to the “elevation” or vertical location of the compressor or compressors inlets in regards to height of the outlet of the accumulator is.

Also, can an over sized accumulator damage system performance?

Thanks,

Amir

Let me sharpen my question:

Due to space restrictions I have the accumulator installed about 20 inches above the compressor.

I know it is recommended to have them on the same plane.
How damaging is this?

Will it have an effect on the system?
or I keep the system working this way?

The function of the accumulator is to separate the liquid from the gas, collecting the return oil from the evaporator and protect the compressor from liquid return.

it can be installed at the same level and above the condenser. If it is installed below the compressor, you will need P traps for the oil return.

I don't see any sense in installing too big accumulator, if you want to be sure that no liquid will enter the sump, use strip heater to keep the accumulator warm.
