what would i have to do to change from 401b to 404a any help would be good thanks

Depends what its in, if its your sentence, then you need to swap a 4 for the 1 and a A for the B :D

But if its in a system then a little more info on the system would be helpful, type of system, design temp, compressor type, oil type, expansion device type, system history, more info the better!

When only changing the gas; cooling capacity will increase with +/- 40%, compressor will be overloaded, evaporating temperature will decrease to much lower values.
Only right way: replace compressor, dryer, expansion and solenoid valve.
Try to flush the evaporator or blow nitrogen through it.
The only thing you can re-use is lines and evaporator.
Or, if you select proper compressor, same cooling capacity as the old R401 one, you can also leave the condenser and receiver but be sure no old oil remains in it.
