Hello all! I have a 1996 Trane 255 Ton RTHA chiller that serves 6 barracks, a mess hall, and 2 admin buildings. The barracks buildings are the vast majority of the load on the chiller. We have a project that will take one of the barracks building at the time off the chiller and install PTAC units. I am concerned about how the chiller will perform as buildings are taken off and the load is reduced. Does anyone have any information on what percentage the chiller can be unloaded before we have problem? What problems are we likely to experience as the chiller is unloaded below recommended?

Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Hello aumeche96,
RTHA can unload to 25%-22%. You may have to install a differential temperature controller to block operation of unload solenoid below this limit.
Further unloading can give oil return issues. Active oil return system (if installed) will not help. In fact there is bulletin to disable active oil return module. You also have to control the inlet water CDS temperature.
Hope I help.
