Hi. I'm new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these reefer trailers? I have two of them giving me the same problem. It's an electric only unit, model NEE 430 N4-SC-0. Carrier's specs show the unit will pull 35.6 FLA @ 230 volts 3 phase. I had to install a 480 volt to 230 volt step down transformer, and am feeding it with about 238 volts. On start up, one of them pulls 52 amps, and trips the 50 amp breaker mounted in it's control panel. The other trailer pulls about 48 amps, and the amps drop as the temp drops in the trailer. At 0* F, it was pulling about 32 amps. I had a third trailer that I sent to Mississippi, and they report the same exact problem with it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have heard of CPR's being added to these units to help with high ambient / warm box temp starts.

Hey Boss, can you put unloaders on them?

I wouldn't know why not. The new ones have them. Vector 5100

Update.
I finally convinced the HVAC guy to look at this with me. The suction pressures were OK, but the discharge pressures were through the roof. He recovered the gas to see how much was in it. The unit called for, I think, 24 pounds, and it had just over 23 in it. He put the gas back in, but used the gauges to decide when it had enough in it. It's now running fine, and cooling fine, and only has about 9 pounds of gas in it. This might be a temporary fix, but it's working fine, and our breakers are not tripping.

Sounds like "non condensables" to me. Have a look at the shaft seal.

Somethings not right if you had to reduce the charge that much. It probably won't heat or defrost very good. I agree with Abbs. You might want to recover it and charge up with virgin refrigerant.

Thanks for the replies. I'll pass this info along. He was scratching his head, too, so i'm sure he'd like to know what was causing this.
I work at a prison, and the reefer trailers are only used to store product in the event one of our regular freezers goes down. They put the product in the trailer while the freezer is being repaired. So as you can tell, the trailers aren't used all the time.

Do those units have CPR's on them?

I'm going to have to ask, what are CPR's?

Crankcase pressure regulator. It will be in the suction line
