Hello everyone:

Here in my country R-22 is still the main refrigerant for both air conditioning and refrigeration. Nevertheless I have been required to quote the job of retrofitting a R-22 rack to any new adequate refrigerant. The owner have never been too happy with the R-22 performance in low temperatures, and is a little bit scary about future pricing and availability of R-22.
I have been doing a lot of research on R-22 conversions in refrigeration applications. I wonder if it is necessary to follow the trend and retrofit the system to one of this new refrigerants that I´m not very familiar with, of if is is possible to retrofit to the better known R404 or R507 ? What should be the better option between those two ?
regards,

If it was not worked satisfactory with R22 even if it was constructed to work on R22, than it will not work properly on any refrigerant since it is not properly matched to loads.

So your first task is to find out what is really required capacity needed to deal with loads which that rack serves.
Than you could make evaluation if retrofit will be successful or you are going to be blamed that you did not done job properly.

If you are going to retrofit from r22 to r404 or r507 than you need to check that capacity of each element in system is correct with new refrigerant in game.

I would leave it as it is and advise customer to start saving for new equipment.
But, that is why I have lot of time to write here instead of making money with jobs like that.;)

what about r502, thats pretty good at low temp ;)

Capacity wise you should not run into too many issues, just be sure to verify each component (evaps, comps, conds) and select valves carefully. Please be aware that the system will leak like a sieve once the mineral oil is removed, be prepared to change out a lot of o'rings, seals and/or full components.

R502 is ozone depleting and is already banned.

Hello Mate,

Here in New Zealand i know of a few supermarkets that have been changed to ISCEON MO99 (R-438A).
I believe its a direct drop in for R22, will run with Mineral or ester oil and the boys have had no problems with it..
Might be something to think about
