Hi i'm 32 male and have completed air con and refrigertion coures at my local college. I funded the course myself and managed to get the time off work to do this. I am currently working as a toolmaker and have been for the past 15 years so i feel i have a very good mechanical backround which i could transfer to refrigeration with a bit of training. Problem is no one seems to want to employ you unless you have 2-10 experience. So will the time come when there are no Engineers left because no one invested in the future.

From one wanabe fridge Engineer

Its not a good time of year to be looking, air con gets a bit quiet when the weather cools off as does the fridge side to but to a lesser degree.

Have you got your F gas cert?

Another draw back is your age.

An employer wants to have young guys learning the trade as they have no skills to offer and therefore he pays less, minimum wage for a 16/17 year old is much cheaper than a 32 year old with commitments/dependants.

It's all a case of balancing the books.

But........there is always the exception to the rule, so keep tryng, and good luck with your change of career.

If i was in that situation i would split my time without too much loss of income. Decide on which areas of the trade( domestic/commercial/indusrtial) you want to concentrate on then find a business working that field and if they are willing to cover you against accidents, give your time free hrs/week carting tools, something like trade assistants here. You never know what opportunities may arise.. mike.

Hi guys thanks for taking some time and look at my post. I've not done my F-gas yet as its more money and know one seems to have jobs at the mo.

I'm from plymouth if anyone knows of anything.

Think my next step is to try and give my time for free when i can.

Yesssir, during july this year, it was the slowest month for some 10 years( being winter). What winter, temps in this part of Australia at that time usually 0 to+20c but this time +4 to +28.. so i'd expected more work. Really could have taken the month off.. pathetic:(..mike.
