C&G2079 Fgas.

Hi, just did my 2079 with four other candidates, three offshore electricians and one sea going engineer, I thought that part of the point of this qualification was to stop other trades "repairing A/C & fridge systems", or did I miss the point somewhere.
Two of us passed.
Only one of the electricians passed.
Still makes my four year apprentiship and thirtyfour years experiance look a bit pointless, or is the legislation and qualification the pointless bit?:mad:

Sadly NO!
You have not missed the point.
Good Engineers, those that care the type you are most likely to meet on the forum!
Will still care with or without the 2079.
And the cowboys will still exist.

The biggest point of it all is once you have passed this exam / test.
Was your's CITB or C&Guilds?
You have no defence in law and are legally liable for any non compliance.
So many that should not will have the qualification.
But we will all be bound to the same set of rules.
Which at least is a starting point.

But basically those making any money out of this are not the Engineers.
Those that negotiated these new rules are!

Grizzly,can you explain why you asked Don if it was CITB or C&G Please ?
I have been looking at the gas handling courses myself.

Simply put.
Historically and I believe it is the same for 2079 as it was for 2078.
CITB is renewable every 3 yrs (maybe 5 yrs now)?
C&G is as they say "for life"!
CITB is "Open Book"!
Where you answer your questions using your course material.
C&G is "Closed Book"!
Where you answer your questions on-line, independently of the other course participants.
Without the use of any literature etc!
Hence my question as to which exam / test was taken.
Putting it politely "If you cannot pass CITB then you really do have a problem."

Or should I say, "you need more Training"
Basically a safe handling certificate means that you are trained to comply with current legislation.
Not to be an Engineer!

Just possibly something akin to being an Electrician and having 17th edition.
Although I feel I am being unfair on Electricians as 17th edition is not a 1,2,3, day course.
It's a heck of a lot harder than that.

Question for you please,,,please forgive my lack of knowlwdge on your licencing there,but
What is the 2079?
Is it a personal licence for the engineer to perform refrigeration work etc.
Is there a seperate licence required to purchase any refrigerant?

My course was C&G, did the full week at tech, much as I moaned about it, it was a good refresher for me.
2078 is ozone depleting substances, 2079 is F gas certifiction, which is the required standard we are all supposed to attain and be capable of working too. I read a thread on the A/C forum from a DIY person, it was really sad and scarry, I think you comented on that one Grizzly.
