I know this is a stupid question for all you old schools A/C & Refrigeration engineers, But how many wires are there between a indoor and a condenser?.
I know there's a inter-connecting wire between the indoor and outdoor, and you can also run your power supply from the outdoor to the indoors.
Also i know there is a 2 core cable from the units then to a controller but is there anymore?

Thanks guys

Some have only 2 wires, digital transmission over the lines.

On the older UK/ European systems where the air handler is fed first, and thermostatically controlled. You'll either have live/hot, neutral and earth/ground 3 cores.

Live/hot, permanent live for crankcase heater, neutral, earth/ground 4 cores.

Live/hot (3 phase) and earth/ground 4 cores.

Live/hot (3 phase), neutral, earth/ground 4/5 cores (4 if using armoured strands as earth/ground).

Live/hot (3 phase), permant live for crank case heater, neutral, earth/ground 6 cores (5 if using armoured strands as earth/ground.

North American residential/small comercial units; live/hot (240v (2x120v)), neutral, earth/ground.

Live/hot (240v (2x120v)), permanent live for crank case heater, neutral, earth/ground, 5 cores.
