hi guys am new to posting on this site but long time guess you could say fan as I have used this site on a few occasions to solve issues but now I need to ask a question
I have a york ycwj999xx chiller with three j style comps mounted and stage three feeps displaying error code "motor current" I have checked in coming lines voltage and amps the comp is pulling also I have checked contactor and contacts (contactors are new) and also checked the current transformer which seems to be ok, so I am at a loss of what to check next ????? the comp giving me the problems is new only changed 3 months ago but the same error code came up just before the old comp crapped itself (have asked the mob who took it away what they found with it but no reply :(
also on the same chiller (stage2) when loading up comp sounds terrible like piston is hitting top of head and when loaded up it shakes the whole chiller so bad the pcb,s and tb's are coming loose.
any help given would be great, thanks guys and R.E love the site, now I am registered cant wait to hopefully help some one one day with a problem :)
thanks again Jase in space

Your motor protector serially wired with H.P. Switch.so if you have any H.P SWITCH issue display will show motor protection.so check the h.p. switch continuity and motor protector.

Hi:
it would seem like you have 2 problems electrical ,and mechanichal.
you should check wiring ,of the wires going to the current transformer ,you could messure the actull curent by inserting a amp meter in series.
then i would check for liquid slugging ,or internal mechanichal failure.:)

Hi Goshen.
I am not sure about that one my friend on most York units you cannot make a direct comparison.
Between the current drawn display and the measured (Say with a clamp meter) Value.
Try it on a working unit and you will see what i mean.
Jase.
A 3 month old machine with either issue is someones warranty Problem.
Time to call someone back!

Hi Grizzly
i stand corrected ,you can only messure the current on the old units with the external seperate ct's,
on the new ones this is impossible !;)

Hi Jase

Doe's the compressor 'run on' slightly when stopped ?

If your electrics check out ok & the compressor supplier side steps any waranty the next step could be to remove the heads & carry out a valve gear inspection.

If the vibration is worse with a particular set of pistons when they load-up, start with that head first..

Is the compressor new or a reman of the old one ?

Three things can cuase motor current trips on these,

1. Current tranformers
2. H.P
3. Motor protection module

you say you have checked the cts , try and change with the other compressor to be sure , also check auxillary contacts on the contactors.

Check the motor protection module and thermistors
Check the H.P switch ( not the transducer )

Make sure transtition of contactors is also ok

Hope this will help

Thanks for all the reply guys, I have changed ct's with other stages and fault still occurs, have tonged all three phases on trouble comp and nothing wrong there. Thermistors and motor protection module are ok too. The only fault that really stands out is oil pressure is little low, but oil pressure fault would not come up as " motor current" fault. Few of you guys said to look at hp at time of fault disc press was apx 1740kpa and has transducers.... (btw system is r22)

Hi Jase

Just re-read your original post..

Stage 3)
What Moideen & Intercas are saying is check your HP switch (not transdeucer) for being faulty, not just tripping.
As Intercas said the items listed are the ones that can cause your type of fault.
Also check for loose plugs.
Have you meggered the compressor windings to check if they're ok ?
Is the oil in a good condition, is it showing any acidity ?
Why was it re-built, was the original cause of any failure identified ?
The low oil pressure is not a good sign, how confident are you that they've carried out a proper reman ??..

Stage 2)
Can you pump this circuit down, will it then hold a head of pressure ?
Stripdown & carry out a top-end inspection..

Lots of questions i know..
Let us know what you find..
