Hi all,

Does anybody have any information on the procedures for R409 and R408 as they are in the same bracket as R22?

Thanks in advance.

408 and 409 were replacement refrigerants for R12 and R502.

They are both HCFC refrigerant the same as R22, because they are both Part made up from R22.

Thanks for reply, does anybody know what the drop-ins are for these refrigerants?

Cheers.

I'm not 100% sure I understand your post??

Drop in for 408 and 409??

408 and 409 are drop in replacement refrigerants for R12 and R502.

The longer term refigerants that have replaced 12 and 502 are R404a, R134a and hydrocarbons.

408 and 409 are drop ins and are now being phased out under the Montreal agreement to ban HCFC's.
408 and 409 will be gone by 2016..

Instead of R409A i now use R413A.

I don't work on any R502 kit to worry about drop ins for it!

Thanks for help again,

What I mean is - If i arrive on site and am working on an R408a system or an R409 system but I can't get hold of the refrigerants anymore - what should I use?

Thanks in advance! :)

ksmejko,

i dont think there is a drop-in for those 'drop-ins', unless anyone else nows to the contary.

you would need to assess each job on its own merits.

you could possibly drop-in Isceon 59 (R417A) which is the R22 drop-in, as this would need no oil change, only changing to a R22 TEV.

This said, R22 gives less performance against R502 at low temperatures & more capacity against R12 at medium temperature (i think), so it maybe bit 'trial & error'.

Long term its a system change.
