500m is the distance at which it can detect a reflected signal. The actual beam it sends out can travel for miles.

The biggest myth is that it is Radar. The fixed 'Gatso' roadside cameras are Radar operated, and need a 240 volt supply to work.
Those little hand held devices, whether called 'Radar' or 'Laser' are actually Infra Red emitter/detecter devices.
