I have been watching a trend in small do it yourself refrigeration applications where basic refrigerant flow practices seem to be ignored. These systems use hermetically sealed compressors of less than 1000 Btu capacity. My questions are, if the compressor’s suction port is sized to except ¼ inch OD tubing what is the maximum diameter of evaporator tubing and return line to compressor for a system. Background: what has happened, with maybe as many as ten systems now, is owners have been advised to use very large evaporators with ½ inch OD tubing. Suction pressures with 134a refrigerant will start at 10 psi and drop to zero. This compressor at zero suction pressure is rated at 360 Btu.
