was working on a hussman l.t pack today with 8 scroll copeland compressors and noticed the the oil line which comes off the oil seperator and then feeds 8 oil mag valves was too hot to touch, plenty of oil in seperator, all compressors operating ok.The reason i ask is cause the pack next to it,oil line line cool to touch. The pack with the hot oil line had a leak on one of the coldrooms so was running flat out, would this cause it?any advice cheers

The oil line is at discharge pressure, if one of the compressors is calling for oil it will get hot, if the pack is cycling it's compressors quite quickly then all the compressors will call for oil when they stop, making the oil line very hot! i.e. discharge temperature. As long as it is not just one compressor calling for oil continually this should not be too much of an issue. Also make sure there is plenty of oil in the seperator/reservoir otherwise it results in discharge vapour entering the compressor sump!

Typically, if you have hot oil return lines the oil float is leaking or stuck open. This allows hot gas from the separator to flow through the line.

These packs are fitted with a Helical seperator/reservoir with direct oil feed to the high pressure oil regulators on the scroll compressors.

Oil regulator is stuck open on 1 or more comps.

Feel which one is the hottest and shut down the comp and oil valve to it and lleave it for 30 mins and recheck the rest of them.
