Yes R410a, has higher pressures than say R22, but has lower compression ratios (which is infact the important bit) Since R410a has been used generally we have found that we have a lot less leaks, both in manufacture and installation (greater seems to be taken) I see now problem with the 10 years.
Sign a maintenance contract, bi annual service, with the customer, apply a coil preserver like "corium" and keep the machine in good shape. It'll give u 15 yrs.

ROFL, if nothing ive been coming here for a few laughs :)
Back on topic though, ive been guilty of commenting as well of the life expectency of R410 ac units.
Where I live and work is on a coastal part of NSW Australia where A/C units are exposed to sea breezes and 35+degC ambients through the summer months. Often when replacing a rooftop mount split system we have had to take the box with us onto the roof to upend the old A/C unit into as they basically fall out the bottom when you lift them. The example is based of 5yo LG splits on R22.
You can always advise people to service their A/C units regularly, but I tend to find that clients that request A/C service are often quite meticulous when it comes to looking after their investment anyhow and they have already done most of what needs doing.
Quite often though I come across A/C units that are overgrown with garden foilage, or boxed in so they look nice. Once I attended a chlidcare centre that had covered the fan guard with some shade cloth.
Perhaps 410 grade copper with stop them going pop in the summer, who knows. To date though ive had zero 410 a/c explode ;)
