I am looking for anyone who can help me setting up the refrigeration department of a technical school in Eritrea (East Africa). Looking for text-books, curriculum, examples of training materials, supplyers of training materials, classroom layouts etc. Has to be in English and SI (metric). Absolutely not looking for old stuff of 25 years back. The donors want to invest in modern technology, good equippement and they want to pay for it. Thanks for any reply.

Hello Nick

Ive been to Eritrea so am intrigued how you getting on. Actually I lie, I stopped in Asmara for a little while, too short to see anything, the Etiopians wouldnt let me stay long enough !!!

But am fascinated with that country. Perhaps we could have a travel section in this forum where we include stories from engineers working in far flung places

I know of an English guy who went to Papua New Guinea.......and his spun enough yarns about cannibals, and tribal wars!!!

All whilst repairing the humble refrigerator!!!

If you are interested in "how to remove bullets from a Sabroe compressor" and "how to repair a vertical watercooled condenser who had a previous career as grenade catcher" than plenty stories available from Eritrea Abe. More interesting would be to hear how to get out of different situations, both technical and personal.

How to make discharge valves from filling-knifes (max 3 months) and how to put a 3.5 ton condenser in the factory?
What are the typical treats to your health in Russia (where in Rusia?), why you shouldn't leave money in your passport in Asmara and how mutch you have to put in Nairobi.
hmmm, very interesting.

Maybe these personal things are better on an other site. Already this site is not so hot (where are the colleagues?) and dilution to general subjects may worsen it.
Haven't you noticed that refrigeration engineers and technicians are very serious (about themselves)? Better to keep this for the technical Q&A.
Anyway, when I am home I am in for a chat. Anybody else out there?

Which other "site" are you referring to Nico? Probably a section within the refrigeration forums would bring a bit of light hearted relief to the "agonies techs experience" whilst perusing the normal hum drum tech speak about pressures and psychometric calculations!!!

pss come back safely from whichever battlefield youre presently refrigerating!

Sheesh! You guys make me see just how soft I really have it... you should have seen a post I had regarding valve replacement on a system... just a scenario. Nobody mentioned using a fillet knife for a discharge valve!! Wahooo... now that would have made it interesting!!!

Seriously... that is some on the spot ingenuity... and they last up to 3 months?! Holy Smokes!!

Not my merit Dean (is that English?)
The local guy made that and these people are great!
No education, some training by an old italian engineer, no support by the management, sub-zero salary, but stil going strong. I hope that sites like this can support these people.
Don't worry about us Dean. We can simply call for spares and they are send by DHL & co. (most of the time).

Any connections, ideas for the training??

Nico,

Ive heard about Eritrea being different, ie: very little corruption, Unlike its neighbours. In Kenya you have to bribe your way out of everything, the worst are the officials at the airport, ( security men) who go through your stuff, find currency, ask for receipts, ask you if you declared on entry, etc, etc, then openly ask, "you see your plane, you want to leave" if you do, then how can you help me?"

Need I add more...... But I think Eritrea is different. I shall scratch my head and see what I can come up with to help this training thing you implementing there. As a business specialist with Marketing expertise I can certainly assist in this area.

I think theres a company in the States that manufactures training equipement for refrigeration students. Africa will go through a renaissance I feel during the next 20 years. Let us not ignore this continent, especially those countries that want to develop, Robert Mugabe, take note.

What do other techs feel?
