Hi i have an old R12 hermetique compressor model caj 4511. It is 1 hp. I want to run it on 134a, so i want to change the oil first. Can anybody tell me how much oil this compressor should take.

It is 887 cc according to this website..

Scroll down the screen.

It's amazing how helpful Google is.

Thank you for the reply. I have disconnected the compressor from the condensing unit and turned the compressor upside down and drained the oil through the suction port. The oil i drained out was a bit short of the amount you have told me, but i intend on putting the required amount 887cc back in. Do you think it would be safe to run the compressor and use the suction port to charge it with oil or what would you recommend? Thanks again.

You could pour some in while the compressor is disconnected.

Some of the original oil will be around the system pipework.

I should get away without changing the expansion valve(R12 external valve), its a low budget job what do you think

Why did you go to all that trouble when you could have used R413a as a straight drop in ?
This refrigerant is not on the list to be phased out in december and is a direct replacement for R12 with only a minor adjustment in most cases to the TEV and pressure controls.

The reason i am using R134a is because i have plenty of it and i do not have any drop in replacement. I know i can get mp39 which is a drop in replacement but it is a low buget job and the 134a is payed for on another job plus the condensing unit is in my garage on a bench so it was not that dificult to do. Low cool would probably take the short cut but i like to think i do the job properly and ask if i am not sure of something it has nothing to do with being green.

gday wheelo
if your not flushing the system then you should be having two more oil changes.you can still use a drop in on poe oil.cheers

I might not need to flush the system as there is all new pipework and the condenser receiver and evaporator have being blown out with ofn

I can't understand if it is a low budget job, why all the work you have done, pipework, ofn, pag oil in a compressor designed to run on mineral oil,you will need to fit an R134a expansion valve not to mention your time involved.
I would have recharged with R413a quick easy minimal cost to the customer.
Or do you only use one refrigerant in the your daily working life?

Stop! Research Drop in refrigerants.
We have r414b. No oil change, expansion valve etc. very simple and reliable

Thank you all for your advise, i have taken it all on board and will use a drop in gas.
