View Full Version : Maximum water ppm levels for refrigerants

Hi, a green newbie requiring assistance,

We are responsible for piston compressors and high speed vane type compressors on the gas recovery refrigeration on a gas to plastic plant.

Question is;
" what is the 'allowable' water level in ppms the mineral oil lubricant in use?"

Our test results came back as 469 ppm and we resampled a day later and the water was 68 ppm, sampling proceddure and condition exactely the same.

The concern is water was not detected in previous analysis causing other questions of
"Can the system conceal water and release it later?"

"Is there any chemical reaction in the system that could create water?"

What refrigerant, what oil, have you had service problems between testing (has the system been opened)

Oil added to system , is it sealed or open to atmosphere where it could absorb moisture or water .

Maybe you could sample it for a base .

Also does system run in a vacuum as I'm assuming its on ammonia ?

How old is system and is the water effecting anything that you know of ?

Hi Thanks for the asstance

The Carrier chillers operate on Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) R 134a
Each chiller has a nominal charge of approximately 748 Kg per chiller.

OIL MANUFACTURER: CASTROL
OIL TYPE: ICEMATIC SW


We are wishing to know the maxppm water for stability and also Max TAN before servicing
