Do many homes have existing hot water cylinders?

Is there a market for a hot water heat pump that can be retrofitted to just about any cylinder?

What sort of price would a end user be willing to pay for such a retrofit? (average sort of family). (apart from as little as possible!!!!!)

Do you get govt grants for these types of products ?(solar ect.)

What sort of gross profit do you contractors make on this type of appliance (domestic air con, heat pump)
cheers

Hi mad fridgie
Had you considered the Ausi market. There are govt rebates here. Hot water heating is upto about 40% of our power bill. How fast could one be retrofitted and could a savy handy man do it in a flatting situation (so I could take it when I move). I would expect contractors would have about a 30% margin here. My power bill is around A$1200/year and going up, so as a consumer I would pay for a small unit to fit a 50 litre tank. I might expect to pay around $1200 for a fitted unit or more.

Hi Tesla, very good comments, Ausi is a bit of strange market, (houses have heaps of space and the weather is generally hot.)
It is hard to actually make a small unit cheap, (to NZ/Aus standards)
HWHP sales in Aus are already over 100,000 pa. major players Quantum and Rheem These unit are normally integral with the cylinder and sit outside.
I would hope to bring new technology to Aus

Excellent mad fridgie
I don't believe there are any products In Ausi for the people who rent. If you could build a heatpump that could be simply fitted and removed (with a few extra fittings), renters all around the world would be interested. Us renters have the oldest and most inefficient water heating systems installed due to tight landlords. As a bonus in Ausi a heat pump unit could be installed inside to help combat the heat and it should be cheeper due to the smaller tank size=smaller compreessor - we only get one shower then have to wait 20 - 30 mins before the water heats enough for the second. While were thinking about cheep you could sell assesories like a roll of bubble wrap and tinfoil for insulating the tank. Ohh and don't forget that timer, which reminds me I better go and fit my bubble wrap.
Best of luck with your HWHP

Rheem are trying really hard to do the heat pump hot water but they are failing terribly due to their noisy crappy evaporators!! There are so many complaints about them!!

Hi Mad, try this one,

www.rheem.co.uk

This web site is a random web site and has no connection with the rheem hot water systems I was on about. I am talking about rheem in australia and new zealand who are cylinder manufacturers. I don't think that they exist in the ukm all of the bad reviews were in australia and new zealand.

Noise is an issue with all water heating heat pumps, as generally they are working quite hard, Rheem and others are mounted on the top of the cylinder, it seems to increase the sound that is heard ( not theory sound levels).
Rheem in Aus and NZ have the oppotunity to increase performance and reduce sound level.
It is up to them if they are interested in utalising new technologies

Can you explain further on the 'evaporator' noise aspect? Not compressors, piping, vibration, condenser, but 'evaporator'?

Why I ask, is that their evaps seem to be rather compact, but deep. Is this an expansion noise?

These storage heat-pumps have awful COP's.

the rheem ones i have seen are a remote condenser . i will post the link of complaints.
they should partner with a reputable brand of heat pump which have the technology and quiet operation.:D
