Hi guys, When compressors are off of cycle, does the refrigerant still flow from discharge line to suction line through the compressor itself?

Not generally,
If a sudden pressure equalization happens at stop, would indicate a busted discharge valve , this will allow pressures to balance quickly. Can you indicate what type of system you are referring to.

My understanding is that this is possible, especially for certain types of compressors.

desA,
can you be more specific. Exception being a screw compressor

In a good working piston compressor? No. Discharge valves prevents this.
Scrolls sometimes have a non return valve build in it.
Screws? Yes.

Peter is right. In general, compressor valves are not like intake/exhaust valves in a combustion engine where certain cam positions will leave a valve open. In recip machines, the valves function as check valves when the pistons are not moving. Gas really can't go the wrong way unless something breaks.
