R407c
Is it true that if you have a leak on a R407c unit, you have to reclaim the gas and put a fresh charge in?I was under the impression that 407 is not diffrent to any r400 gases.Ie charge as a liquid, due to it been a blend. But some one told me today that you cannot add gas to a 407 system,is this true?
{after you have fixed the leak of cause}.

as you were saying r407c is one of the 400 series which has to be charged as liquid , when it leaks yo dont know how much of which refrigerant has leaked out.

Some test in field are done and it is safe to top-up of about 10-20% of total charge without significant change in performance.
If you need to top up more than that, you should recover and recharge with new refrigerant.

If you have a leak with a R407c you should always reclaim the refrigerant and then recharge with fresh gas, R407c is basicly R410A with some R134A thrown in, If you have a small leak on the system you will generally lose the R134A as this has a very fine molecular structure and you will have something that resembles R410A in the system. Quite often I have found R407c systems running with high HP's due to the systems having a small leak normally on the suction side.

There is a school of thought that if the leak is on the Liquid side of the system you should lose the blend in equal amounts but I never trust this.

I had a call from a customer yesterday with a HP fault on one of our systems and after talking to him and getting to check gas pressure's and more importantly temperatures he reclaimed the system and found it 6kg's short (total charge is around 30kgs) the leak was found and the system recharged and ran perfectly.
