will the above display cabinet work ok without the small fan blowing on compressor.Have had to disconnect .

Hi folco.
I don't know the cabinet described.
But it is logical to assume that the comp / system needs the fan.
Therefore You could assume that it is necessary!

Yes it will work as long as it is not in an high ambient as a temporary measure, have a feel of the filter drier, you will soon know if it will work.

replace fan before you ruin a perfectly good comp. if its there it is there for a reason.
