Hi guys,

First post on here, but am just after learning about some of your experiences.

Currently working on a project to provide total cooling capacity of about 1 - 1.5MW over the next couple of years.

Need to phase in the supply of equipment as unfortunately a large capex isn't going to be signed in the first instance so probably only looking at something like a 500kW chilled water unit, with potentially 5 downflow units and rinse and repeat three times.

Ideally looking for something with built in free cooling, that acts as a split and can do both at the same time (benefit of free cooling with some extra assistance from scroll compressors).

What are your guys thoughts for equipment choices?

Currently looking at something like the Stulz ASD1100CW downflows, with a Stulz chiller as well (model number escapes me at the moment!).

Hi and welcome Schumie,

The simplest form of free cooling would be a dry-cooler inline with (before) the chiller.
Then just the simplest form of chilled water downflow units in the room(s).

A lot of the chiller manufacturers has caught up with this and have built the function to control external dry-coolers in to their controls. (For example: Hitachi).

Some of the well known bespoke comms-room-unit manufacturers have some wonderful ideas about free cooling, unfortunately they don't seem to work as well in practice as they look good on paper.

KISS is a good principle.
