I have some water heat pumps going to Saudi, they are on 407, I suddenly remembered hearing somewhere that this refrigerant is not suitable for use in the middle east, am I right? or did I dream it?

It depends on the design. Surely not the best choice, but perfectly suitable in a water to water heat pump.

Yeah, water to water would be good.

Unfortunately these are air to water

Just refer to the operating limitations of the units. In the manual should be some information about the maximum ambient temperature. It is all about the size of the condenser coils not to the refrigerant.

Yeah, the manuf is sort of wobbling at temps above 48 deg C

I can imagine the manufactures wobbling at 48'C condensing, or at worst 48'C ambient, imagine the discharge temps at compressor. Fried oil and valve damage, compressor temps.

If ambient is 48'C, what temperature is the water being heated to?

Practically, though, I'd imagine the heat-pumps would be useful for the night-time low ambient temps, would they not?

At 48'C ambient, who the hell needs hot water.
Me , cold water showers and add ice. Stir gently and pass a cold beer.
