hi guys, got another question for you beautiful people out there!

i have a 3 phase motor that was lying around in our office so i bought it home to learn more about it, basically this motor has 9 wires + an earth on casing, i was wondering if you guys know if these wires are a "standard" color in the uk and if so what part of the motor windings they are connected to, i found a vid for a single phase motor on youtube but this is 3 phase, also dont know if colours in the usa will be different?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqiHh_Rufi0&feature=PlayList&p=96B73180C70B8945&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=34

there are, 2 black, 1 brown,1 blue, 1 purple, 1 white, 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 orange

thanks guys as i say im in uk!

Do you have make and model#?

this paticular motors model no is :HAR114, it comes from an IMI,

as you asked this question i presume there is no standard color codes for all the cables? if not what is the easiest to "Build" a picture of all the windings ohms? when im not sure what is what? like in the video above?

I dont know for standard code.

if not what is the easiest to "Build" a picture of all the windings ohms? when im not sure what is what? like in the video above? That is pretty hard for 3-phase motors since it is essential in multi-speed multi windings applications that phase sequence is same.
You need to discover what is number of windings, what is start and end of every winding and then how to connect it to contactors.
That is why I asked for model make and manufacturer.
In your case, if everything fail, you could take motor to local rewinding company to identify what is what by examining windings layout.

Check this page (http://www.electricmotorwarehouse.com/motor_connection_diagrams.htm), it may help!

i see, as you say there are many different options there could be, i will try and find out for this particular motor, its plainly obvious that this would be easyier with a single phase motor even with triple speed. thanks nike i will try research and see what i can find.

Are you sure that your motor is a 3-phase motor or is it a multispeed motor?

I would suggest the 2 black wires to be of the protective contact inside motor controlling winding temperature. Does not the yellow wire has a tint of green to it? Then, it may be a grounding inside the motor. Make use of a multimeter anyway.
