Measure the superheat at design conditions.

Why do you want to check it if you have un-installed it it needs to be installed to check correct operation, you could always take it apart and check the internals for a rough idea

If you already uninstalled TXV, than it is usually cheaper to install new one than install it back to found out that is faulty and then repeat all again. If you uninstalled it, change it!

physical examination of valve might be of help such as damaged bulb, kinked capillary , bellow inside for visual crack if any . Function test only after you start system & observe design parameters.

TEV and TXV is one and the same?

Yes... Thermostatic EXpansion Valve

At one time, TXV was the more common abreviation, but over the years TEV seems to have become more common.

Hello Gary. May one accronym be in American usage, another in British? (only which where?)

I have heard it both ways on both sides of the pond, but TEV seems to be far more commonly used outside of the USA.

Yes, thank you - TXV is rather the obsolete term.
