View Full Version : Daikin Split f3 Fault

Hi there,

went to a site before which had a daikin cassette giving an intermittent fault code of f3.
i know this fault code to be discharge pipe abnormality. what is the best thing to start with for checking this intermittent fault.

i have swapped outdoor pcb and discharge thermister with another unit in the same room to see if the fault moves along?

The Outdoor unit us Model No: RY100DAY1 An its r22 system. suction runnin pressure was at 40 psi.

With a suction pressure of 40psi it would appear to be short of gas so perhaps the fault code is correct.

hi brian,
i was getting off the coil temps at the evap at around 10degrees. this made me think that it would possibly be something else?

hi there moon

i also agree with brian, thinking short of gas. 40psi is a low enough suction pressure to provide little suction cooling to the compressor causing the high discharge temp fault but not low enough to trip the lp switch.

hi there coolments.
so next step yous reckon would be to decant and weigh the refrigerant out and check for leak(s).
will try that then next time on site, is there something to help me out in future cases on pressures being slightly low, i always new r22 to be about 50-55 psi, but i pretty much ruled out a leak due to getting 10 degrees off the coil?

Check for good airflow through both coils (indoor and outdoor) and that both fans are running.
Connect you gauges and then take temperatures around the system checking subcooling and superheat measurements.
This will tell you if you are indeed short of refrigerant.

hi marc,

i am fairly new to service side used to do alot of installs but taken on a more service roll with install jobs seemin to slow a bit.

the fans where operating ok
to check the coils do i need a tool to do this?

anyone reccomend a good read up to help explain superheat and subccoling and to check for it please?

cheers, i googled superheat and subcooling and will check this forum also.

i had a look on the search for checking airflow across coils but could not find out, is there a certain tool i would need to check these?

With regards to airflow just make sure both coils are clean (indoor and outdoor) by brushing them, then using some type of specialist coil cleaner to clean them with from the wholesalers...this usually does the trick.

There are ways to check if your coils are clean by doing a simple calculation regarding ambient air and your pressure from your gauges but for nowi would read up on the above thread then if you have any more questions just post and someone will help you.

cheers marc will check it out, really have missed out as my old company would not allow me to go college and really until you are shown from reading up there are lots of things to consider.

anyone know of any nightschool classes for a service technician to attend , i am from manchester.

Dont be beat up about about not going to college, I didnt get that either like a lot of us on here.
Your already on the road to being a good service engineer as your not afraid to ask for help.

thanks coolments, yeah i am keen on learning just can be quite hard when your out on the field and and something comes up where really training or learning would have helped out no end.

It appears to me you have the right attitude mate, being out in the field is the best place to learn. I think your in a position I found myself sometime back. Heres a few principles I work with:
1. On breakdowns of a/c....a) Identify....b) Analysis/record....c) Solution.
2. Try to keep fault code guides with you.
3. Have some good contacts (other engineers).
4. Read service/technical manuals.
5. Use this website.
6. Keep good communications with customers.
Remember: You not going to know everything and in the words of Oscar Wilde... Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes! I've been working within the a/c business about twelve years and I find myself still learning. Have fun!:D

Hi thanks for your input mate. will take note of your list and to be honest i pretty much am doing all the above so am on the right track. i have posted in the training section to see if anyone can help also

got called back to the system with f3 fault.

decanted gas and found 2.2kg in system
the unit has a piperun of 40 mtrs and should have 4.5kg of r22.

system is hopefully ok now its been rectified

hi Nike yeah leak was found on the suction flare Nut.

we have just been called back to the same room where the other daikin unit has F3 problem.

looks like same again guys :rolleyes:
