Hi Guys.

Does anyone know of anything you can get to put down case drains to get rid of the horrible jelly, got chilled islands in local sainsbury's that get blocked up with jelly, and its lovely sucking out with with a hoover.

This is a wide spread problem with drains and as far as I am aware it is caused by an algae of some kind.

Somebody should take a sample to a lab and get it tested, find out what it is and how to kill it.
Whoever does this is going to make a small fortune selling the remedy.

Hi Dude,

cool idea above ground can't do that tends to flood the store, had metro rod in to clear drains below ground,

want to try and find something to put down drains to break down jelly, to save stripping apart.

Gallo gun might give you enough purchase to get some sort of anti bacterial agent flowing down there. No idea how big your drain lines are though, probably bigger than anything I've seen :D

Best way with sainsburys drains is go and pinch a pot of sanitising tablets off the cleaner, but about 30 in a bucket of hot water (instuctions say 1!!) and pour down the drain. be careful though cos they fizz like ****!! that should do it! worked for me at some stores, worth getting manholes up if you can though, just use some screwed rod, piece of channel and a pallet truck, easy!

Have tried the drain cleaner and the "One Shot" product in the bottom link with very little success.
The top link related product is more for a/c application, although I have also tried this in the supermarket drains to no avail.
Some colleges of mine are starting to worry about the health implacations of this slime. Does anyone have any negative or posative feedback to do with engineers close contact with the stuff?

The substance in question has the technical name "Elephant Snot".
It doesn't like vinegar or caustic drain cleaners.
I've been scooping handfuls of the stuff out of cases for over 30 years with no noticeable ill affects. (though sometimes the customer has to go away and throw up.)
Once you get over the appearance and see it for the money spinner it is, it isn't so bad. It can be a very reliable source of overtime.
If it isn't cleaned out regularly the drain will block and the fan motors will die. The case temp alarm then goes off and the shop has to wear the cost of a call out.
It doesn't take to many of these events to convince the supermarket manager that the cases need regular cleaning, especially when you show him the sticker at the back of the case that says to clean them once a month.
And of course, no manager wants their customers to see the crap that lurks at the bottom of their cases.
Be sure to point out the work place health and safety hazards involved in his / her untrained staff going near electric motors or spinning fan blades with a water hose.
Of course, once you've made it safe, the shop staff can clean the shelves you have to pull out.

These tablets are no good in the pipe, once you suck the jelly out, you can put these down but they just wash out! Tries these and many others.

The problem with the peristaltic dosing is the cost!! it works but the chemical is £399 per year!! The other problem is that unless the installing company do it right, it wont work. We have these systems installed on a major retailler and the cases are still leaking. This is because the jelly is occuring before the dosing pump. Vac the pipe out during a deep clean and bear in mind the jelly happens more in cases nearest the doors and when the weather is warmer.

One shot is very noxious and more for sub structure drains, I would try not to use this if I was you. Or any chlorine based cleaners as these produce a gas similar to what Hitler used to kill people with!!

High volume wet vac ALWAYS works. We use a 70ltr twin motor 1200w and it has never failed. On some cases plumbing you may need to block a few inlets with 50mm stoppers to get suction. Other than that, as a last resort we carry slip couplers to just cut into the case plumbing nearest the block, suck both ways, and use the repair coupler. When you have done this once, you have an access point for next time as the jelly usually blocks in the same place.
The only way this wont work is if your doing it wrong.

if i do a full island i plug every case and go around to every case and use vac on each drain. once every case is done poor some DRAINKLEEN into each drain on each case this stuff stinks but is great.
if sainsburys get joint visit with metro rod if full island is leaking water or if tesco get IST to get there drain guys in for joint visit.
kill to birds with one stone otherwise the book gets past where the blockage is if above ground and underground are done you will defo get the blockage.
