is commissioning a vrv system that much different (not counting size) to a split or twin split etc?

Welcome to RE!
Yes it is! It involves significant amount of brazing which need to be done properly to avoid system contamination and future refrigerant leaking. Also, oil return is issue and pipe layout should be done properly.
And some more small issues.
