What would we do without it?
How would it affect our daily lives?
By Tony Deith
Refrigeration covers many aspects of our daily lives, from when we get out of bed in the morning and pour cold milk over our 'Frosties' or in our coffee. We then go to work in our air-conditioned car, to our air-conditioned office. In the evening we head for the supermarket to do our shopping with all its freezer and chill displays. So how would society cope without refrigeration?
In a recent survey in the U.S., Americans were asked what household item they could not live without. Their answer was the refrigerator. It is not the luxury item it was in the 20's and 30's, it has become an essential item of everyday use. 150 years ago, domestic refrigeration was not an available option. The only way of keeping food fresh was by storing it with ice in an icebox. Or food was preserved with spices or salt to prevent it from rotting.
It is doubted that any one person could lay claim to inventing refrigeration as we know it today. It has been the efforts of several individuals spanning 150 years. It is constantly changing and being updated, be it domestic, commercial or industrial refrigeration, From basic thermostats, to the networked controller, all engineers and technicians face new challenges.
Over the coming months on these pages, I will be writing in greater detail of the people who made refrigeration what it is today
