Last week I thought I would upgrade from Win 98 to Win 2000.
What a task!!

The install went ok, until I loaded my AOL software.........Then system hung.
No internet, just sheer frustration.

Made calls to AOL. A very helpful member pointed me in the right direction. My Intel Ham Modem driver was not digitally signed.

So ensued a frantic search for a suitable driver.

In the end, I borrowed a US Robotics Courier, Win 2000 loaded the appropriate driver and I am back on line.

Only problem now is, my screen keeps flickering. Very annoying !!!

I changed the setting to 56 Htz. I know the UK is 50 Htz, but windows only shows 56.

Still the same.

But Im back on line............Why did I bother????

hey abe,

I thought something was wrong,

why on earth did you go for windows 2000?

windows XP profetional is what you want, it will do everything you need without you even know.

but still, good to have you back.

Hi Chem,

Nice to be back, Yes I should have gone for XP. After I load Win 2000, I had to go to Windows update. To make this OS security proof I need to download 32 MB of patches.

Thats how unsecure Win 2000 is. I get nasty messages keep popping on my screen, telling me how to increase size of my you no what, to goodness knows what else.

So Ive now loaded Zone Alarm, and I think its stopping now..........but its like all Greek to me !!!

Ive also installed Spy Bot

Why dont they just hang all these Virus developers !!!!

Why does everything have to be so hard???

Why isnt everything like refrigeration, simple and easy............. :)

Hi all,
Same problem everytime BT get me to download another update for the openworld system. CRASH !!!!, lots of phone calls to their 50p/min line. Nice to see how they make their money. Running windows ME at the moment with Norton AV all seems OK although i have been told ME has a huge amount of bugs in it. Tried ZoneAlarm ( Downloaded from MS webside) and computer hung so running without at the moment.

Just come back after a week in france & Belguim. 60 e-mails only 10 worth reading all the rest junk about buying drugs online. Spent 30mins deleting from system. So much for BT's spam filters.

Regards

Raymond

hi raymond,

you dont have to download everything they send you.

NAV known for trouble making in windows.
try grisoft, they have free antivirus called AVG, really good.

and dont just download and install any program that looks good. usually it is not.

look for asoftwere called clean space 8 its free and keep your hard disks clean.

google bar is very usefull and also spops popups.

good luck

BEWARE!!!!! XP is Microsoft's best operating system, but it is very demanding of resources. It needs lots of memory. You really need a newer machine to run it.

If you want an easy life, never try to upgrade hardware or software, just buy a complete new system - the cheapest that will give you what you need.
