a freind has a dispaly case that was a 409a unit the compressor (3 ph) locked up. he was going to replace with a r12 compressor (change voltage line to 120 1 ph). or a complete 404a compressor/coil unit. i had doubts as eather would work very good if at all.? the 404a compressor unit is 230v 1 ph. getting the correct line voltage to the compresssor and fan is not any problem, the matching refrigerant is the bigger problem.

Compressor doesn't care what refrigerant he pumps. Consideration is oil and refrigerant compatibility.
Also, different refrigerant in use gave different refrigeration capacity of compressor which depend on compressor displacement, compression ratio and used refrigerant mass properties.

R409 is just a drop in for r12 so the r12 comp will work fine with no need to change oil

As 409a is a blend ,pay attention when you're charging the system.... Try to add liquid ..
