Can anyone explain the above to me in easy to understand terms. I've read that rectification is a way of seperating the oil from the refrigerant that has got past the seperator.

It does this by mixing it with the hot gas from the discharge line to boil off the refrigerant, or am i completely wrong?

There are probably as many ways to do this as anyone can imagine. The main principle with this issue is to provide sufficient heat to be able to boil off any liquid refrigerant, which would leave 100% oil (more or less) in a location for recovery.

In this example, someone is describing using the hot gas as a heat source for boiling off the liquid refrigerant. It can also be done with electric immersion heaters, heat exchangers on the compressor discharge line, etc, etc.;)
