While on my quest for the impossible .... I also have on site , not one but three ,1947 Carrier 17P 's that were low temp back in the day , and now converted from 3 stage to single stage. Presently one is driven by 550 # steam , and all now are running 134a .
Finding parts has sent every one so far to a scrapyard in Texas including Carrier. Any ideas on sources of information-drawings or text before we pull out the hot wrench on this package ?

It's probly a long shot but you could contact Inter-chillers in Sydney, they have the biggest chiller manual library in Aus and specialise in chillers. Inter-chillers has a can do - will do attitude. Good luck

60 years is a respectable life for a 17 series chiller, but they were, after all, mostly hand made.

You don't say what bits you need, but therein may lie you solution.

They were designed to last in the days when Carrier made proper kit. They packed it all in when UTC took them over.

It's unlikely that Carrier or anyone else will have parts lying around on the shelf after this time, bearing in mind that many of them were customised at Syracuse.

Shame, because they were great bits of really rugged kit.

Thanks a bunch to both , the float assy. is trash and "wood" seems to b the metering device of choice from condenser , upon inspection 10% + tubes plugged and eddy test has shown many bulges bottom mid evap . Still investigating and looking . Thanx !

The tubes are available probably at any tube vender. Sounds like low evap temp issues with no working controls to shut it down or unload the machine. Nothing like pulling buldged tubes.

For the float you could use a Fisher level control with an inline valve. It is commonly used in refrigeration aplications for flooded vessel aplications. May have to do some repiping to make it work, but its doable.
