Need Help on Design/sizing of Mixing Tank - Industrial Cooling
Need Help on Design/sizing of Mixing Tank.
I have a process (Dairy) cooling application where the Chiller Side Supply water is 60 GPM (Temp in 5 Deg C & Return water to Chiller 14 Deg C) and Process Side (3 Nos Plate Heat Exchangers @ total Flow rate of 5 GPM ) Supply water to process is 5 Deg C & Return Water from Process Plate Heat Exch 50 Deg C.
We have been recommended a Mixing tank of 2000 Gallons.
Can someone suggest me how to partition the tank for the Hot Well & Cold Well and the locations of the inlet & outlet pipes.

I would appreciate a detailed suggestion as I have no experience in such a installation.

Oren:

The first thing I notice is you don't have a heat balance. Flow rate x Delta T has to be equal for both the chiller and the process.

Also, your flow rates are starkly different. The flow rate for the chiller should exceed the flow rate for the process by only a marginal amount.

2,000 gallons sounds like a lot to me.

I don't know the optimum tank partition location but clearly the cold side will predominate.

This sounds like a very common application. There should be plenty of 'rules of thumb' in the dairy industry that will get you to the right place.

Hello oren:)

I have some experience of the dairy industry. Why 50 deg c return:confused:

This sounds like a temperature off a pasturiser WITHOUT the use of regenerative plates in the pasturiser.

It is normal that the cold milk coming into the pasturiser cools the warm milk leaving the pasturiser, leaving the return to the chiller only about 4 to 6k warmer than the flow from the chiller.

Kind Regards Andy:)
