Thought this was interesting!

The company had a unique design for a reciprocating compressor -- a standard two-piston system allowing both pistons to pump when running in one direction. However, the single-phase motor it's using allows the compressor to operate in both directions. And when the compressor rotation is reversed, only one piston operates while the other ratchets. Voila! A true 50% capacity reduction.

nice idea, its not on their web site.
an electric motor which changes the rotating direction all the time.
will have a bearing life about 30 to 40% shorter.

in compressors there are no ball bearings but slide bearings that are much harder than the shaft. by changing the rotating direction also the direction of the poewr is changing causing excesive waer.

I do not belive in gimmics for the long run.

wasnt it bristol who came out with two speed compressor?

any one here uses such a compressor?

I don't have an opinion one way or the other But the author seems to think that this technology will come about.

i've read it.
we will wait and see when it gets to europe.

bristol scrolls have a lot of problems here and copeland rules the market.

the problem with this idea is that if something goes wrong with the 100% capacity, the 50% goes as well.

I would have use two compressors.
