How can I detect moisture in a regrigerant?

The easiest would be to fit a moisture indicating sight-glass.

Otherwise, there are various test kits on the market, like "total test".

In order for me to suspect it if no moisture sight glass is fitted one of the things i would note is that the system runs ok on start up but after while would start to indicate a blockage at the expansion device (as ice crystals form in it and bock it) then followed by extended equalisation time of the pressures, especially on cappilary systems.

Hi Viking,

total test is OK for systems which contain mineral oil but won't work on new systems which contain synthetic oil i.e. HFC systems.

Carrier have now produced a NEW totaltest for R410A but it is expensive and they won't state that it will work with other HFCs
