Hi Chaps
Have any of you had dealings with a company who whould like several ac units fitted in a display at Farnborough Air Show this year.?
We had an inquiry from a company abroad that are staging a show in what can be described as a huge portacabin with about 14 offices in at this years farnborough air show.
Anyway , i have seen the plans and have submitted a tentative quotation on this basis.

However it all seems a bit too good to be true and have a hunch its a bit of a con. Havn't ordered any kit and have asked for money up front but am still very dubious.

Any info or previous experience shared would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gareth

Wouldn't you be better hiring a big portable AHU and duct it to where you want cooling?
This way you wouldn't have to lift a finger as the hire company fits it all for you (I think).

Definitely get the money upfront.

Portable cooling is not such a novel concept. They use these on some aircraft as well as factory floors for personnel working in hot areas.

Depending on the site conditions I might also look at evaporative cooling to do the major cooling effect with some supplemental AC equipment. It depends on the ambient conditions though...

I thought that workplaces had to be maintained at 21 degrees?

I spent a day trouble shooting a system installed in the control tower at Farnbourgh aiport in about 2003.
The contractor advised that they install a lot of split systems for the air show each year for the exhibit stands.

Look out on Ebay after the show for some bargain systems.:D

There is no maximum temperature in the workplace :p

Not so.
For enclosed factory / office areas the minimum temp is 16C and at present there is no maximum.

Maybe our friend Abe can shed some Statutory wording.

I have a feeling that the minimum is Statutory. but the maximum gets that lovely legal term 'reasonable' and we all know whats ok for one, isn't for another, or to put it another way, the man with the cheque book says 'stop complaining, 30°C is fine, if you rushed around a bit more you might just generate some draught and cool everyone down!'

I have a friend who runs his own company and makes a fortune out of the air show, every two years he buys £ 75,000 worth of kit just for the show.

Further discussions with the customer may reward your effort????????????

We used to get a lot of business out of Farnborough normally bi-annual, but not much for the last couple of years.
Temporary air con is big business though, we would do half a years turnover in 1 job if i got our latest Dubai job, the arabs don't do things by half!

Going back a while (circa 1980) I was at Carrier (owned by UTC who also owned Pratt & Whitney). We were asked to A/C the UTC "stand" at the Paris air show. Three custom built 40ft long Porta Cabin type buildings complete with suspended ceilings, fancy chrome fittings, window dressings, bars, toilets, fancy lights, outside seating / cafe area, commercial kitchen et al. Heat gains were horrendous with a tin roof & no insulation.
Back then there was no VRV/F or portable units so we did what we did best – got hold of the biggest DX 38series R22 air cooled condensing unit the power supply could take and piped up to a vertical 40RR AHU. Pair of trousers ducting off the top, 90 degree bend, supply duct system straight down the middle of the buildings, VVT (Variable Volume & Temperature) control system and Moduline linear slot supply air diffusers integrated into the suspended ceiling grid. We hired one our dealers to design & make the ductwork and install all plant and commission.
We shipped all the ducting and controls over from the UK, the condensing unit & AHU came from the Carrier French factory in Montluel and the Moduline diffusers from the Carrier Gravigney factory in France. It took two weeks to install the system and the night before the air show opened the condensing unit lost a compressor!!! Mad panic to get a replacement which was installed 1hr before the show opened. 3 week later the whole lot went in a skip – well quite a few skips actually!!
I have no idea what it cost – all swallowed up in the corporate budget somewhere. I must admit though it was a great experience.
So unless things have changed the aircraft and defence industries have got money to burn – go for it and hold out for the cash up front.
