Hi milton,
Conect your gauges to the Compressor: High side to discharge and Loe side to suction. Close the service port. connect your amp-meter to one of the "0" wire.
Close the the gauges and start the compressor. the compressor wil show youup to 350 to 400 psi on the high side and vaccum on the low side. Make shure that the current is within the maximum stated on the compressor. switch it off and observe the gauges.
It should hold the pressure if ok. If the high pressure falls down quick - get a new one.
Good luck.

I surely should never close completely the discharge service port. If you hadn't a broken valve, then you will surely have one thereafter. But I think you meant only the suction service port.
I use sometimes an ultrasonic 'leakfinder' of SDT (A Belgium Cpy, world leader in ultrasonic measuring devices) to listen to the hissing inside the compressor body. After a while, you can hear quite well if an inside valve is leaking.
