I was working on a York unit today and bumped into something I hadn't seen before. It was a choke coil to regulate condenser fan motor speed. How does this thing work?

A choke coil is a filter for alternating current and by itself it does not control motor speed but it could be a Direct Current fan. Can you give more details or model?

Its a Split York Model H2CA090A25B 7.5 HP compressor,...I'll have to photo the schematic today and the control box...If it was DC I think I would see some kind od rectifier somewhere. I didn't.

Sorry I don't have info on that model.

Could you post photo in full resolution on some photo host server and then post link here!

I checked the unit again today and found when the LLHP hit 300PSI and opened the switch on 2R, 50V jumped up to 208V and so the speed of the fan too. It has no low ambient kit either. single stage cooling. Someone installed a GP relay to pull in the EFM contactor. This isn't on the schematic needless to say. I replaced 2R because it was chattering like crazy and the fan speed was slow till the LL got hot and the 5R acted as a LOR. The choke even looks like a transformer in the schematic and physically too!.. Weird...It runs good now though...
