OK Guys - give it to me straight!

My Volvo S80 is starting to give off that tell tale smell of a dirty evaporator.

Question is - is it an easy task to clean the evap or should I leave it to the local Volvo dealer??

Don't shoot me 'cos I drive a Volvo :D

Bear in mind that I don't work on car AC and I HATE to lift the bonnet (hood) :p

The car is 3 years old - and no, I'm not changing it yet.

I've seen some sprays somewhere that you supposedly just spray in to the air intake...

Frank.
As usual Chunk's got it covered (He's a good Man!!!).
if you dont fancy laying out for specialised sprays.

I followed a suggestion from one of the lads when I placed a similar post last year.

What I did was using some Janitol antiseptic / antibacterial / perfumed toilet spray.
I sprayed this into the air intakes having put the aircon onto cabin / recirculate.
Not aware of any problems since?
Grizzly;)

By the way I like volvo's (must be an age thing. cos it can't be because they are so well Engineered can it?)

Frank, Halfords sell, or sold, a lemon smelling aerosol that you use yourself.

Put the vent system into recirc, stand the can in the footwell, turn on the fan and the ac then trigger the can.

Oops, forgot - get out of car....:)

The can runs for two or three minutes and it does seem to work.

I prefer Gillette Deodorant myself :D

Seriously, SRW sell a "Frionett Clim" aerosol spray for this, and also another one "Airco breeze" which is similar.

Do you travel dusty roads and get the smell on starting the AC? In that case your AC probably works at low evaporating pressure and condensation collects dust that is given off the momet it dries. An air filter could improve this but not solve it unless you use special filters. Getting suction pressure up above dew point should accuit the AC, you will get the smell anyway but on the road not when starting the AC. Solid coatings that are craking up in fine particles could also cause this.
