Hi guys, I've got a calorex heatpump dating from 89' and its on R502. The compressor is duff and i've been advised by calorex that a R407C compressor along with a new TEV will get it up and running again.
They have advised running the system on R407C but i would think that R22 would be better considering the old system ran with mineral oil and R502.
Opinions please:D

Cheers Jon

I can see your point about the oil but would you be alowed to put R22 in as a retrofill gas??
How long has R22 got now? With R407 you will have to flush the system clean but after that it would be the better longer term solution??

Cheers taz.

Bite the bullet and flush the sytem, change oil type....how about R507 instead of R407c....much closer to R502.

Why don't you just replace the unit?
In the long run, surely this would be more beneficial!

Why hasn't it been ripped out and been replaced before?
I bet its not on its original compressor.
I've never seen one run on R502 every old one I have ever been involved with were all R22.
If I were you, and if you couldn't replace the entire unit, I would put a R22 comp and valve in it, while you still can.

Anything but R 407c. I would have put in R22 or R404A/507.

Thanks for the replies:)

I think i will price for a new heatpump tommorrow, but i think calorex will only supply these through thier dealers and i'm not one of them:(

Its definatly on R502 as it has a blue R502 sticker on the comp. and it also says the same on the model info sticker R502 3.85kg

I don't much like R407C either, though i think this is what all the new ones run on.

Also i was thinking of the F gas inspection requirement if i fill this with R407C as these things use automotive style reciever/driers and unless i can get a braze in one as opposed to flared, the customer will have to it inspected etc every year.

Why don't you use R408 drop in for R502

Hi Jsimon,

I'm stuck with buying the compressor from the manufacturers as the model plate has rusted away on the old one and hence have no idea what it was to get an equivalent R404A one that i could run on R408A or similar.

Its got a new R407C comp on it now and i'm running it on R22 due to concerns about residual mineral oil content of the system. This is causing a little bit of fun in getting the superheat correct, but thats another story....

Hi Jon
A bit late to help you this time, but with over 20 years working on Calorex systems you were right about the 502 they used to use it in all their heat pumps.I have used 22 in all the old 502 systems for years and have had no problems.
