OK,

Can you provide us with some more information, like compressor type/manufacturer/model, or do you want us to keep guessing?

I do hope that the system has a suction to liquid heat exchnager to put some superheat into the suction gas.

If you are talking about the TXV, thermal expansion vlave, it purpose is to feed refrigerant to the evaporator in a controlled amount based on a minimum superheat at the evaporator outlet of about 6 dC. If the refrigerant is not expanded and too much liquid is left at the exit of the evaporator, you will flood liquid to the compressor and ruin it. Refrigeration compressors are designed to pump gas, not liquid.

If the evaporator is a flooded design (propane liquid on the shell side), there is still an expansion valve controlled by the level of refrigerant in the evaporator.
