We are looking at changing our locomotive air conditioner from a single unit (think a very large window mounted air conditioner) to a split system where the evaporator box is 30 feet away from the condenser and compressor box. How much performance can we expect to lose? 10-15%? Doesn't it depend on how well we insulate the lines? How much refrigerant will we have to add? Can this be calculated from the volume of the added tubing?

30 feet ~=10 meter, that's well within the spec for most splits, unless you aim for the really cheap and nasty ones.

When you look at the specs for the unit you got in mind there will be it's rating as well as the maximum pipe run, just don't exceed it.

(And the interconnecting pipework need to be lagged/insulated)

Capacity of today's compact unit is 30,000 Btu/hr at 95 F Outside, 80 F DB/67 F WB Indoors. We are re-designing the unit so it is broken up into two boxes about 30' apart. Are you saying if we are within the maximum recommended pipe length and the line is insulated, we will not lose capacity? Does the recommended maximum pipe length come from the compressor mfr? I think you can take the 30' as our maximum pipe length.

Now I will take a step backwards...

Are you talking about building the units yourself or using an "off the shelf" split type A/C unit?

We manufacture the units ourselves, packaging the compressor, coils and all else in a large metal box. We would like to turn this box into a split system.

From this I take it that you are manufacturing these units and sell them on to other users?
