Hello boys, what gives? it has just taken me 15 mins to get this far.
Hello slingblade it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, help provide a solution or just engage in a conversation with another member in any one of our forums?
Why so slow to navigate the forum? i spent ages generating interest in this website come on dez you must be earning a fortune by now, sort it out mate.

There is a whole thread on here (RE) somewhere about it and most people agree that it runs faster than internet explorer.

Actually Sling there is usually no money in these things which is why this particular forum is so bad. Ask anyone who owns a forum and they will tell you it's more a labour of love than a money maker. Look at the advertising- all low grade, low yield stuff.
ITV are unlikely to come in and buy this place like it did Friends etc
Of about 10 forums I visit this is the only one which constantly has these problems and the solution "get firefox" is a bluff. I have btw and it's not worth the download. FF is better for web developers who can access code etc better than IE7 (but 8 will solve that problem)
I suspect it's a more to do with the level of server utilised being woefully inadequate. A lot of smoke and mirrors is being used to try to bluff it out (as in "use firefox") but unless a mass cull of non-posters is done this will remain and get increasingly slow..
(and therein lies the rub- reducing numbers to a realistic level dents potential advertising revenues as a forum promotes the amount of registered users to increase fees)
So it needs the numbers to get the money but the money isn't enough to support the numbers...
This is a bit like the "currently online" - I've long suspected this figure falls in the 'lies, damn lies and statistics'

Of course a lot of people (myself inc) just leave their PC on 24/7 so maybe there are a lot with open browsers who are sound asleep? -or prehaps old Crazy is a slow reader -who knows:D

Slingblade, firefox does help. I was also an IE user for years and when I switched over to firefox, wow, speeds were great.

One thing that might help.
The server does an auto back up every morning ar 0530hrs GMT, this takes between 30 to 40 minutes and yes, at that time there will be a slow down.

I using Firefox 2.0.0.11 with No-script ad-on, and site is fast (opens page instantly) most of the time (90%).
Also, I have ADSL with 1536/384 kbps conection. Sometimes is little slower, but that doesn't mean that was problem with site server. Could be also that your service provider connection is busy or somwere else in path to your computer.
Gloucesterfridge you are service engineer. As a such, you should know that from your computer to site server is lot of "components and wires" who could slow down data flow.
Install Visualroute (or similar) and find out where is delay coming from before accusing someone. Than post your findings here.

Again you avoid answering the question(s) and try to deflect it with more smoke and mirros. Lots and lots of people have mentioned that this site is slow running etc and you avoid the issue with a Neslonic "I see no ships"

I have tried accessing this site from several different parts of the country on different computers using different ISP's. As a refrigeration engineer this tells me it's the site at fault, pure and simple.
Plus others are getting the same effect -even you admit it doesn't always load and still you try to 'blame' others no the site...
My post was sympathetic note towards running forums but one which admits there are difficulties rather than just avoids them...

That what you are saying is like diagnosing system without measuring anything. Just by feeling. That is subjective. What is slow for you, maybe is fast for me. We need objective data.
These are my measurements:

Where are yours?
Remember, we are kind of peoples who need measuring instruments (possibly calibrated) to be able to speak about our findings in numbers and in a way that others have reference about that numbers.
We are not poets or psychiatrists.;)

Well thank you for your time and input. I know of only one man who would be so anal as to go as far as that in a response to a slow loading website page. good to have you back Marc.;)
and therein lies the rub
Come on Sling you know this phrase was used a lot by his alter-ego Richard;):D

My post was sympathetic note towards running forums but one which admits there are difficulties rather than just avoids them...This site is as fast as any other international site for way down in australia. Not as fast as local sites obviously, but I don't think there's a regular major problem with it compared to all the european and US based forums I go to. A couple of niggling problems, but nothing to stop you browsing the site.
1)This forum is as fast as any other international forum for me.
2)The only problem I have is when editing posts, it won't work, you have to go to the advanced edit tab to make it load SOMETIMES
3)Most sites this big, are a decent earner. Just ask rich kyanka @ SA or james rolfe @ OCAU, or the guys that started ars techinca, anandtech or ebaum.
4) I agree with the weird users online thing, since I made sure to ask how long users got to view (15 pages), and I know people who logged off for a long time are still listed as active for 2-3 days.
Edit : I use opera for a browser though, so YMMV
edit2: webram: anything change recently? The fast reply text box on my page shrunk so small it's unusable, about 25 char wide. Could be me, just wondering if you changed anything about 7 or 5 days ago?

Same problem I have!
One more problem is that this site could not remember me (it looks like cookies don't work here).
After every disconnecting, I need to manually log in.
On other sites and forums I normally don't need to log in manually. They recognize me and I am logged automatically.
I checked firewall (Zone Alarm) and cookie control is off.
Does anyone have similar problems.

It sounds like it is your browser that is not accepting cookies.
You could also be automatically 'washing' them when you close down.
